Sani Pradosam - June 16 , 2012

Pradosh, also known as Pradosha Vrata or Prahosham Vratam, is an important day dedicated to Lord Shiva. It occurs twice a month falling on the 13th day of each lunar fortnight as per the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Pradosha takes place during the two phases of the moon, i.e., waxing and waning. When a Pradosha Vrata falls on a Saturday, it is known as Shani Pradosh or Sani Pradosha Vrata. According to Hindu astrology and horoscope, Lord Shani is believed to create problems for people in life. By observing a vrat and offering prayers on Shani Pradosh, one can escape from the ill effects of Lord Shani and keep them at bay. Check out more on the significance of Sani Pradosham and the method for observing it.

Significance Of Sani Pradosam
According to Hindu mythology, the day Saturday is dedicated to Lord Shani or Shaneeshwara, one of the Navagrahas or nine celestial gods. Lord Shani or Sani has always been related with troubles and ill effects. Moreover, all Hindus believing in astrology dread the effects of Shani over a person’s life. To overcome and avoid the adversities and misfortunes of Lord Shani, people observe fasts on Shanivar or Saturday. And when a Pradosh falls on a Saturday, it is termed as Shani Pradosha. To overcome the bad influence of Shani, devotees observe a vrat on Shani Pradosh and offering prayers to Shiva during the day.

The fast is observed from sunrise to sunset and ends with the evening puja. Since the name Pradosha literally means ‘a period just before sunset and after sunset’, the Pradosha period for prayers is from 1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset. While most of the devotees prefer observing a strict fast by refraining from food and drinking only water, some devotees practice a partial fast by consuming fruits and water. Nonetheless, the strictness of the fast totally depends on the devotees. Even after offering the evening prayers, devotees eat only the Prasad and recommence with eating proper food only in the next morning. During the day of the fast, devotees visit Shiva temples and offer pujas and chant mantras.

How to do or observe Pradosham or Pradosha Vrata dedicated to Shiva?

Pradosha Vrata is observed on the 13th day of a fortnight and there are two Pradosham in a Hindu month. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped in the evening during twilight on this day. In some regions, the day is dedicated to Nataraja form of Shiva. The fasting on this day is observed for success, peace and fulfilment of desires. It is said that mere darshan of any of the one form of Shiva removes ignorance.

Pradosham is observed when the Trayodashi Tithi is there during the twilight period. This is important.

The importance of Pradosha Vrata and how to observe it is narrated in the Skanda Purana.

There are two methods of fasting on the day. Some people observe a 24-hour fast which includes not sleeping during night. Another method is fasting from sunrise till sunset and after Shiva puja in the evening the fast is broken.

Pradosham is the twilight period just before sunset and after sunset. Pujas and prayers are performed during this period. Many people during this period spend the time in a Shiva temple or listening to the glory of Shiva.
In the evening, an hour before sunset the devotee takes bath and prayers are offered to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, Ganesha, Kartik and Nandi. After the initial prayers, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Kalasha (sacred pot). The Kalasha filled with water is covered with darbha grass and a lotus is drawn on the pot.

Another form of worship is the puja of Shivling. The shivling is bathed with water and Bilva leaves are offered. Some people use a painting or picture of Shiva for worship. It is said that offering Bilva leaves on Pradosham is highly auspicious.

After this people listen to the Pradosha Vrata Katha or story or read chapters from Shiva Purana. Then the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is recited108 times.

After this the water used in the puja ceremony is given as ‘Prasad’ along with sacred ash. The ash is applied on the forehead.

It is said that just lighting a single lamp during Pradosham period is enough to please Lord Shiva and the act is highly rewarding. Majority of Shiva devotees have a darshan of Shiva during Pradosham in a nearby temple.

The purana story behind on Pradosam

Once Indra lost his kingdom and found that only if he consumed the Divine Nectar he could rule. So there was a tug of war between the devas and asuras to obtain this nectar. The Devas and Asuras got together to churn the ocean, using Mandramalai & Vaasuki, the snake. As they continued to churn the ocean, Vaasuki the snake began to tire and started spewing its poison. Siva came and consumed all the poison. Thus Siva became blue up to his throat and is also known by the name "Neelakandan" ( neela-blue colour, kandam-throat).
Goddess Parvati rushed and held his neck so that the poison would not spread to the whole of his body. Shiva then became drowsy and selected a village called Surutapalli (near Chennai), where he is seen sleeping on the lap of Parvathi. This is the only temple that houses Lord Shiva in a sleeping position.

Narada, meanwhile, passed on the message and down came the Devas, Brahma, Vishnu and the Saptarishis, to have darshan. They were promptly stopped by Nandi who asked them all to come after some time, as Shiva was resting. All of them waited. Shiva, when he woke up, was filled with extreme happiness and danced ("Ananda Thandavam"). This day, when the Devas, Brahma, Vishnu, Narada and Saptarishis had Shiva darshan was a Krishnapaksha Trayodasi (Stiravaram, Saturday). This is the Mahapradosham day. Pradhosham, generally, is a significant occasion observed with great piety at all Shiva temples.

It is believed that all the Devas & Gods are assembled in the Shiva temples during Pradosham time. Further, the first pradosham was on a Saturday & hence "Sani Pradosham" is even more auspicious.

Happy Mother's Day May 13 , 2012

Special Poem for all the Mothers in this world

Oh Mother,
You are an amazing person,
Tirelessly carry me in your womb for 10 months,
Go through the pain to safe guard me,
Sacrifice and never thought about yourself but me,
Take good care about yourself so that i will be safe,
Always put me first and yourself last,
Pain and misery for 10 months because of me but You don't mind,
Day by day,
Week by week ,
Month by month till 10th   month,
There I am out in this world from a different and saw my precious mother,

Oh Mother,
The amazing and the powerful person with strong will,
Full of tender, love, happiness, caring  and bliss,
Take care of me till I grow myself to be a fine person,

Oh Mother ,
After all your sacrifice and love that you have given to me,
I tend to forget because too busy chasing after my job career or business,
I forgotten that You  had moulded me to be a fine young man,
I forgotten that Your  love had become the propeller to drive and move me forward,

Oh Mother ,
On this day May 13 ,
I shall remind myself about You who had done the sacrifice ,
I shall remind myself about You who had given the unconditional love ,
I shall remind myself now and forever about You  the only one who was there next to  me when I was brought out to this world,
I shall remind myself now while You are still around so that You will feel  the unconditional love from me,

Oh Mother ,
Forgive for the anger that I show to You when You are correcting my mistakes,
Forgive me for the nasty words poured to You when I am so engrossed with my daily life,
Forgive me forgive me forgive me,

Oh Mother ,
Thank you thank you thank you,
I love you from bottom of my heart,,,,,,
You are Great,
You are Great,
You are Great,

Om Shanti

Eswaren Kannaa's Story of Panching Sivan temple.
According to the historical background, this Sivalingam Statue was brought there in early 1993 by a member of the Nachitram Family from Negeri Sembilan. A few years before that, he often visited the Panching Cave in Pahang( Panching is a small town which is located on the road from Kuantan to Sg. Lembing-an old tin underground mining town), where a Buddhist Temple was built nearly a hundred years ago. During one of his visit there, he met an Indian Sage in the cave who told him to bring a Siva Statue to install it there! He immediately took upon the idea and flew to India to buy the Sivalingam Statue.
. When the Sivalingam Statue was brought in; it being 9 feet tall and weighing several tons was left at the foot of the hill for a while because there was no one who was willing to undertake to take it up to the cave leave alone to install it there! This gentleman then got hold of Dr Sethugavalar, an O&G Consultants in Kuantan and requested him to take it up and have it installed in the cave. Dr Sethugavalar, the President of the Jalalingam Temple, paid Rm20,000/- to a group of 25 Indonesian Workers in 1993 to haul the lingam up to the entrance of the cave which is more than 150 feet up. From there on, it had to be rolled into the cave for  distance of  another 100 meters for installation!
I came to know about this place through Dr Sethu who invited me to pay a visit to the temple in 2006. The path up to the temple was very steep with its twists and turns, making it very hazardous for any one to make the climb up to the cave. I have been there more than 10 times and on every visit, we would do a simple abhisegam for the Sivalingam with Water, Milk and Honey! At that time, I harboured the idea of making proper steps up to the Sivan Temple just like how the steps for Murugan Batu Caves were constructed! Furthermore, the Brahma Padam which is the lowest portion of the Sivalingam was broken and the Vishnu Padam/ Siva Padam above it were tilted and inclined to one side. It could topple over if a slight earthquake were to happen! So Dr Sethu, his committee members and I were contemplating of how to right the situation by making the Brahma Padam in Malaysia. In fact, a quarry in Negeri Sembilan did eventually cut a granite block which was brought to the foot of the hill but finally the Committee decided to import the black granite Brahma Padam from India.
In 2007, I appealed to an old friend in Kuantan who was an ex-JKR officer, Mr Venudurai, to help build the steps up to the cave and he kindly agreed to contribute RM20,000/- for the purpose! He started survey work to find the easiest route to construct the staircase up to the Caves. At the same time, our Beloved Lord Shiva decided to land a helping hand. He appeared in a vision towards end of 2007 to Ir A. Sivabalan who was doing some work in Kedah. In this vision, he clearly saw a Sivalingam Statue up in cave atop a hill somewhere in Kuantan. He was amazed and puzzled with the vision but he decided to check it out. He asked several people about the whereabouts of the Sivan Temple in Kuantan but no one could give him an answer. One day, he asked Mr Venudurai whether there was indeed a Siva Temple in a Hill Cave in Kuantan! Mr Venudurai told him that there was no Siva Temple in Kuantan but there is one in Panching! This got Ir Sivabalan interested and he immediately decided to visit the location. When he finally visited the Buddhist Temple in Panching Cave, he knew this was the place that he saw in his Vision a few months ago.
With this resolved, he immediately brought his whole gang of workers from Selangor down to Panching Cave in early 2008 to do up the Siva Temple properly including erecting a steel staircase structure leading up to the entrance of the Cave. The Steel Staircase alone was built at an estimated cost of RM150,000/- all expenses being met by Ir A. Sivabalan and his sub-contractor friends! All this is History now because the first MahaKumbha Abhisegam was held in late May 2008. More than 80 buses from all over the country joined in the grand celebrations!
The 4th Annual Celebration of the Panching Sivan Temple appropriately called Jalalingam by Ir Sivabalan will be celebrated on Sunday 27th May 2012! This is now one of the most interesting places of pilgrimage in Malaysia for Hindus especially for those who worship Lord Siva.  On the Way to the place, you have time to visit and spend some time in Maratandavar Temple, the famous Murugan Shrine in Maran.

May the Almighty Bless You and Your Family.

    Bless and Love.

    Chitra Pournima May 5, 2012

Vanakam and blessed day to all

Chitra Pournami 2012 - Birthday of Chitragupta

Chitra Pournami or Chitirai Purnima is a Tamil ceremony observed on the Poornima day (full moon day) in the Tamil month of Chitirai (April – May). Chitra Pournami ritual commemorates Chitragupta who according to the scripts is the assistant of Lord Yama, the God of Death. The day is also dedicated to Indra, the head of Devas. It is on this day that the star Chitra and full moon come together. Considered as Chitragupta’s Birthday, the Chitra Pournami or Chitirai Poornima 2012 dates is on 6th May 2012, Sunday.

Chitragupta means collection of pictures. It is believed that Chitragupta examines the good and bad performances of the person. When a person dies, his soul first goes to Lord Yama, where Chitragupta tallies the deeds and report it to Yama. On this day, special poojas are conducted at temples and people take bath in holy rivers and temple ponds to wash away the sins committed. Chitragupta Temple at Kanchipuram is the only one temple in South India dedicated to Chitragupta. Thirukoteeswarar temple at Thirukodikaval, situated on the Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai route, has separate shrines for Chitragupta and Yama. In these temples, Chitra Pournami festival is celebrated in a grand manner every year.

    Legend

There is a legend associated with Chitra Poornima involving Lord Indra, the king of Gods, and his Guru Brihaspati. Lord Indra and Brihaspati once had an argument. As Indra failed to respect Guru, he stopped advising Indra who started committing sins in the absence of Guru. Days passed and Brihaspathi returned to his duty. He advised Indra for a pilgrimage to the earth to lessen the burden of sins. During the pilgrimage, Indra realized that he had been redeemed from the sins. He found a Shiva lingam under a Kadamba tree and believed that Lord Shiva had helped him in relieving his sins. Following this, he started worshipping him. He worshipped Lord Shiva with a golden lotus which he found from a nearby pond.

This was believed to be happened on a Chitra Pournami day and the place was Madurai in South India. Devendra puja is held during Chitra Pournami day in Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, commemorating the event.

    Chitirai Poornima Celebrations in Temples

The Mangaladevi Temple located at Kumily in Idukki, Kerala also celebrated Chithra Pournami festival with much religious fervor. Mangala Devi Temple is build in Pandya style of architecture is dedicated to Kannagi or Kannaki Amman, the main character of the South Indian epic Silapathikaram. The temple is around 2000 years old and remains closed for the entire year except for Chithra Pournami Festival. Hundreds of pilgrims from Kerala and the nearby state of Tamil Nadu visit the shrine during the festive occasion.

    Bless and Love.
